Young designer

Some time ago this year my mom came over from Brazil to visit me in Dubai. She brought with her something she thought I might like to see again: A couple of mother’s day cards I made her when I was 9. I was quite surprised to see how much of the work I do today resembles what I already did in that early age – no wonder I became a designer. I really had a blast looking at those again.

It’s in portuguese, but I’ll translate the more important bits. Check these out:

1.

My mom is a doctor, so you can appreciate my use of the tools of her trade to relate to the target audience. She’s more specifically an anesthesiologist, hence the presence of a laryngoscope. Talk about direct mail!

On the top image, you can notice how I divided the space in 3 with doted lines – 1/3 of the space for each letter. I suppose I did that after I realized my “M” was too small on my first try on the back side!

But, really, you’ve got to love the use of slab serif on the type!

2.

This second one is a little comic book. This is done in an elegant 2-color design and different types of stock for a more tactile experience.

Notice my practicing to draw a cube in the inside cover. In the end of the story, of couse, the packshot. Quite small, as it should be.

The second part of the comic book is a letter:

Not very deep words, but very consistent. The drawing of the envelope is pretty accurate.

On the last page, of course, a double-packshot. And a mysterious letter “B” on the bottom inside back-cover. Maybe just practicing my cursive capitals.

Shame! How many fonts have I used on this one? Although I must appreciate my early love for type, I might have over done it. In my defense, I had no cmd+z then.

You can also tell I went straight to ink, without sketching. Probably a tight deadline.

This is my favorite. An interactive little card! The cover keeps the visual identity o the previous card, allowing for a quick visual connection. As you turn it you see “Mom:” and a little arrow that says “open here”. As you unfold it you can read “Congratulations Mom!!!!!” – with a misspelling I tried to fix on the spot. I could have used a copywriter, you know?
